The Vinyl: For those who aren’t quite familiar with you, mind introducing yourself and share something no one may know about you?
Magnus Ferrell: I don’t think many people know I’m actually bi-lingual! I’ve been speaking Swedish from a young age as my mom was born there.
TV: How would you describe your music?
MF: My music is pretty poppy, I like to say pretty close to Still Woozy, so I guess bedroom pop/commercial pop…?
TV: When did you first start getting into music?
MF: I’ve been playing piano since I was 5, I started writing music when I was 12 and did Jazz piano through middle and high school, which helped develop my music theory and ear!
TV: When you’re in the creative process, what usually comes first, the lyrics or the music? Can you break down how your creative process works?
MF: So whenever I’m making music I usually start with some chords and a melody, maybe laying down a rough track to help guide the song. Once I have that, I always start with a concept and lock in the big idea.
TV: What drives you the most, creatively?
MF: Music has always been a type of therapy for me. I always had trouble really expressing and understanding my feelings from a young age. I noticed that whenever I felt a type of emotion, I almost always ended up at the piano. So essentially, the thing that drives me creatively is that I’m always able to express myself through music, and I love doing it.
TV: You had to write and perform a song, your latest single, Back In Place, in within 13 hours? What was that pressure like? What was going through your mind as an artist?
MF: Yes, I did. It was quite stressful. I really had to focus on the song itself when I was performing because it was so fresh, and so It kinda was unfortunate that I wasn’t able to play and have fun with it like I normally do. However, it’s all good! It’s definitely a learning lesson in show prep, haha.
TV: If you got to collaborate with anyone in the music industry who would you pick? What about that artist influences you as an artist?
MF: I would love to collaborate with Billie Eilish. I think we have pretty similar voices and It would be awesome to get to pick her brain and see the sounds that could be created.
TV: You recently played one of your biggest shows to date, what was it like to perform to a bigger crowd? What are some pre-show rituals you may have?
MF: It was really fun to have a big show, as my preshow ritual I just made sure to relax and have fun as I had taken so much time the weeks before to prepare and get ready.
TV: It’s a new year, what are some goals/new year resolutions you have set for yourself in 2023?
MF: I think my goal for this year is just to keep improving, every day. Even if it’s just a little bit. I want to be able to look back a year from now and be happy with the work I’ve put in.
TV: Anything you’d like to say as we wrap up this interview?
MF: I really appreciated having the opportunity to be able to share a little bit about myself! Thank you so much for taking the time.
