A danish heavy metal band whom formed in 1981 is led by the legendary King Diamond and guitarist Hank Shermann. After a few years of not touring, 2019, it was announced that Mercyful Fate were reuniting on a more permanent basis, with plans to tour and release some new material…fast forward to 2022, live from the DMV the spawns of Satan have returned playing music the diehard fans came to the Fillmore Silver Spring and sold the place out!
Opening up the night was a band called Midnight. I have to admit, I’ve never heard of them until tonight and their set has definitely made me a fan. Think of it as the energy like Anti-Flag but dark. Their set was so energetic and fun in a deranged way. The trio performed a seven song setlist, check out these jams below:
Fucking Speed and Darkness
Rebirth by Blasphemy
Szex Witchery
Here Comes Sweet Death
Evil Like a Knife
Lust Filth and Sleaze
You Can’t Stop Steel
After Midnight stormed off the stage (In a good way) it was time for Kreator to take the stage. This band seemed to have such a good following, as the fans in the crowd kept chanting “Kreator” before they even took the stage. The band then finally came out and opened up their set with Violent Revolution. From that moment on the fans sang each song in their nine song setlist back to them word for word. According to lead singer, Miland Petrozza, the band and their fans had a tradition where the band waves a flag during Flag of Hate, they stuck to that tradition and waved the flag of hate with pride. Check out their full setlist below:
Violent Revolution
Hate Über Alles
Satan Is Real
Awakening of the Gods
Enemy of God
Phantom Antichrist
Strongest of the Strong
Flag of Hate
Pleasure to Kill
After two different, but solid sets from the support acts, the stage was getting prepared for the King himself, King Diamond and his band Mercyful Fate. A giant curtain hid the stage from the fans as they prepared the whole set. The giant curtain displayed the logo/wording “MERCYFUL FATE”. Like most shows fans screamed for absolutely no reason at some points but I mean of course they’re excited to see their favorite band so it makes sense. Roughly around 9:20 PM, the curtain drops, smoke fills the stage and the fans get even louder. The anticipation grew.
The band took the stage first, then King Diamond took the stage, performing from the top platform, so the fans can get a glimpse of him in his goat head piece. Mercyful Fate took the stage opening up with The Oath. This is their first proper tour in quite some time so being able to see them live was just mind-blowing. Two songs into the set, King Diamond eventually removed his goat head piece into The Jackal of Salzburg. Now Mercyful Fate only performed a ten song setlist but with their songs being more on the lengthy side, it made for a beautiful night of worship. OH and there was an encore, which was fan favorite, Satan’s Fall.
